Storm Summary Number 3 for Major Coast to Coast Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
900 PM CST Wed Feb 22 2023

...Heavy snow and ice continues over the High Plains, Great Lakes,
and Northeast...

Ice Storm Warnings are in effect for a narrow region stretching
from central Iowa eastward through southern Michigan.

Blizzard Warnings are in effect for portions of Wyoming,
southeastern North Dakota, northeastern South Dakota, western
Minnesota, and portions of north-central Wisconsin.

Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories are in effect for much of the
Northern and Central Plains, Midwest, and much of New England.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 800 PM CST...A very large and strong storm system continues to
move east across the Plains and into the Midwest. A minimum
pressure of 996 mb (29.41 in Hg) was analyzed over northern
Missouri. A cold front extended to the southwest of this cyclone,
and a stationary front extended to the east of this low pressure,
each of which separated cold, Arctic air from warm, moist air from
the Gulf of Mexico. A separate area of low pressure was analyzed
over central Illinois. A small occlusion led to a triple point in
Indiana, where a warm front extended to the east into the
Mid-Atlantic, and a cold front extended to the southwest behind an
area of showers and thunderstorms. National Weather Service RADAR
and surface observations show a broad area of stratiform
precipitation occurring to the north and west of the
aforementioned low pressure system, much of which is falling as
snow, across the High Plains and Midwest. In the Northeast, snow
is beginning to fall as a slow-moving warm front approaches the
region. There are some areas of mixed precipitation currently
falling extending from central Iowa eastward toward Milwaukee, and
along the Pennsylvania/New York border.

Widespread winter storm impacts, including heavy snow and strong
winds, will continue to impact a large portion of the country
tonight as this strong storm system moves across the northern tier
of the US. In the High Plains and Midwest, snow rates may reach up
to 2" per hour as heavy snow continues. Additional snowfall totals
of 6-12" are expected over portions of central Minnesota eastward
through Wisconsin and northern Michigan. On the south edge of the
snowfall gradient, ice currently falling across a narrow band of
the Great Lakes region will change over to snow, with additional
icing of up to 0.1" expected, with locally higher amounts over
southern Michigan. In the Northeast, precipitation will intensify
tonight ahead of a slow-moving warm front. Portions of western and
south-central New York will see a change from snow to mixed
precipitation as temperatures slowly rise across the region
tonight. Light snowfall totals are expected across much of western
New York into southern New England prior to the freezing rain,
while much higher snowfall accumulations of 6-12+" are possible
across northern New York and Upper New England, with locally
higher amounts in the Adirondacks, Greens, and White Mountains.
Areas of western New York and southern New England will have
significant ice accumulations with this event, with up to 0.1+" of
ice currently forecast. Travel in any of these areas is not
recommended tonight as heavy snow and ice impact a large portion
of the country.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
