For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 800 PM CST...A low pressure center was located over eastern
Indiana with a minimum central pressure of 1002 mb (29.59 in Hg).
A cold front extended to the south-southwest, which was associated
with strong thunderstorms over the Southeast. A stationary
boundary stretched to the east of the low through the Appalachians
and into the Northeast coast. National Weather Service Doppler
Radar indicated an arcing band of moderate to heavy snow over much
of the Great Lakes region and into southern Canada. In addition to
the snow, a very cold airmass has swept across much of the
country, creating conditions that are 10-20 degrees below average
across much of the Midwest, central Plains, and Intermountain
West. Many locations in the northern Plains have temperatures
currently in the single digits in the wake of the storm.

The low pressure system is forecast to move into the interior
Northeast by Friday morning and offshore on Friday evening. Snow
over the central Plains will continue to taper off overnight as
snow bands organize over the eastern Great Lakes and portions of
southern Ontario. Over the Northeast, precipitation will likely
begin as rain, except for some mixed precipitation near the
Canadian border. Warm, moist air flowing northward from the Gulf
of Mexico has been causing temperatures ahead of the cold front to
be well above-average. However, temperatures will progressively
fall over the Northeast on Friday, causing precipitation to
gradually shift toward freezing rain, sleet, and snow by Friday
afternoon. Additional snowfall totals over the Great Lakes region
will accumulate up to 6", with the highest amounts near eastern
shore of Michigan, and lower amounts toward the southwest.
Snowfall rates may approach a heavy 1-2" per hour at times. Gusty
northerly winds will lead to some areas of blowing snow, including
for locations where the snowfall has or will soon end. Additional
accumulations of sleet and freezing rain are expected to be light
to the south of the snowfall axis. Over portions of upper New
England, freezing rain accumulations may exceed 0.1", and sleet
accumulations may reach 1". Light snowfall accumulations of up to
2" is forecast to accumulate on top of the ice/sleet, except in
areas of northern Maine where 6-8" of snow is forecast.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
