Storm Summary Number 2 for Southern Plains to Mid-South Ice Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
900 AM CST Wed Feb 01 2023

...Sleet and Freezing Rain continue to cause widespread impacts in
the Southern Plains and Mid-South...

Ice Storm Warnings are in effect for portions of central, north,
and west Texas, western Tennessee, northern Mississippi, much of
Arkansas, and western Tennessee.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for parts of central, north,
and east Texas, southern Oklahoma, and southwestern Arkansas.

A large swath of Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from West
Texas and southeastern New Mexico to the central Appalachian
Mountains.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 800 AM CST...A frontal boundary stretched off the Gulf Coast
and extends northeastward through portions of the Carolinas.
Multiple low pressure centers are found lee of the Appalachians.
This front has been nearly stationary over the Gulf of Mexico and
slowly creeping eastward across the Southeast. This has resulted
in a prolonged period of precipitation focused on the northern
side of the front. The air mass on the northern side is
sufficiently cold at the surface, creating favorable atmospheric
conditions for sleet and freezing rain across the Southern Plains
and Mid-South. National Weather Service Radar and surface
observations show a region of light to moderate precipitaion
extending west Texas to the lower Mississippi Valley.

The frontal boundary is forecast to settle into the Southeast
before becoming stationary by Thursday. A second round of sleet
and freezing rain is expected to ramp up today into this evening
across Texas before spreading into the Mid-South. By Friday
morning, precipitation will settle into the Southeast as mostly
rain. Additional ice accumulations from one tenth to half an inch
possible in portions of the southern Plains and Mid-South through
Thursday evening. Accumulating ice on roadways will cause
treacherous travel conditions, especially on bridges and
overpasses. Damage to trees, telephone wires, and other
infrastructure are likely to result in additional power outages
across the area.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
