Storm Summary Number 3 for Southern Plains to Northeast Winter
Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
900 PM CST Wed Jan 25 2023

...Snow continues across the Northeast as impacts spread eastward
into Northern New England...

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for eastern Michigan, the
Catskills, Adirondacks, and much of interior New England.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of the Great
Lakes region through the Northeast.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 800 PM CST...A low pressure center was analyzed over Lake Erie
with a minimum surface pressure of 995 mb (29.38 in Hg). An
occluded boundary extended southward towards the triple point in
northern South Carolina, where a cold front stretched southward
through Georgia and into the Gulf of Mexico. Furthermore, a warm
front extended northeastward through the central Mid-Atlantic,
turning toward the east just south of New York City. Latest
National Weather Service RADAR and surface observations depicted
moderate to heavy rain, with embedded thunderstorms along the
southeast coast falling ahead of the eastward progressing cold
front. Further north, in the cold sector of the system, warm air
surging northward has caused a changeover of precipitation from
snow to rain across much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with
the leading edge of the rain stretching from Massachusetts
west-southwest into the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.
Additionally, moderate to heavy snow is currently being observed
across much of northern and interior New England, with snow rates
of 1-2+"/hr in some areas.

Light to moderate snow is possible over the Great Lakes region and
upper Ohio River Valley region tonight as the storm system moves
northeast. Widespread light additional accumulations between 1-2"
are possible, with locally higher amounts to the southeast Lake
Michigan and Lake Erie. Over the interior Northeast, precipitation
will continue to change from snow to rain as the low-pressure
center tracks inland, sending a surge of warm air northward on the
east side of the low. Peak snowfall rates in the northern portions
of interior Northeast are likely to range between 1-2+"/hr,
leading to potentially dangerous travel conditions before
precipitation changes to sleet, ice and rain later tonight. The
heaviest accumulations will be confined to northern stretches of
interior New England, which may reach upwards of 3-6", and 4-8"
(locally 12+") of snow across much of Maine. During the changeover
from snow to rain, ice accumulations are possible, with up to 0.1"
of ice forecast across areas extending from the northern
Appalachians through New England.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
