...Heavy snow expected over the Northeast into Tuesday...

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for portions of the interior
Northeast and coastal southern Maine.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of the
Northeast, the north/central Appalachians, and areas downstream of
Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

Winter Storm Watches are in effect for portions of southern Maine,
southeastern Massachusetts, and the Lower Connecticut River Valley.

Freeze Watches and Warnings are in effect for much of the interior
Southeast, Tennessee River Valley, and Ozarks.

At 1000 AM EDT...A large upper-level trough was located over the
Great Lakes region, resulting in two different, related
low-pressure systems. A mature low-pressure system was located
over central-southern Michigan with a minimum pressure of 1012 mb
(29.88 in Hg). From this low, a stationary front extended through
southern Ontario, separating cold, Arctic air in Canada from cool,
continental air over the Great Lakes region and Upstate New York.
A second energetic, rapidly-strengthening low-pressure system was
located along the North Carolina coast with a minimum pressure of
1001 mb (29.55 in Hg). A short occlusion extended to the southeast
of this low, with a cold front extending southwest along the Gulf
Stream and a warm front extending toward the southeast over the
open Atlantic. National Weather Service Radar and surface
observations show a broad area of snow showers over the Great
Lakes region associated with the low-pressure system over
Michigan, with moderate to locally heavy snow falling over
portions of southern and western Michigan toward the eastern
Wisconsin coast. A separate area of lake-enhanced snowfall was
observed over portions of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Toward the
east, light to moderate snow was falling over portions of western
Pennsylvania, upstate New York, and portions of western New
England.

Conditions are generally forecast to improve over the Great Lakes
region, as the southward-moving snow band will weaken along with
its associated low-pressure system today. Additional snowfall will
be light across this area. Meanwhile, conditions will deteriorate
across the Northeast today. The upper-level trough is forecast to
dive toward the East Coast, resulting in a rapidly-intensifying
low-pressure system moving northeastward along the coastline. For
portions of the interior Northeast, snowfall rates may reach
upwards of 2+" per hour. For areas closer to the coast, including
New York City and Boston, warm, onshore flow will initially keep
temperatures mild enough for precipitation to fall as rain today.
However, as the low approaches coastal New England, northwesterly
flow will wrap cold temperatures around the western side of the
low-pressure, resulting in the eventual changeover from rain to
snow for many areas along the coast. Snowfall across the Northeast
will be significant, especially over the interior Northeast. 8-16"
of snow is expected across much of New England, with locally
higher amounts in excess of 2 feet possible in the higher terrain.
Along the coast, a potentially sharp gradient of snowfall is
expected, with light snowfall totals forecast along the southern
New England coast. Dangerous travel conditions are expected and
scattered power outages are possible within areas of heavy
snowfall.
