At 800 AM CST...A potent storm system continues to track
northeastward across the central Plains, with the main low
analyzed with a central pressure of 993 mb (29.32 in Hg) in
southwestern Wisconsin. An occluded boundary extends southeastward
from the low across the upper Midwest, before connecting to the
triple point over Ohio. A warm frontal boundary stretched
southeastward from the triple point through the Ohio Valley and
banked up to the Appalachians, while a cold front extended
southward through the lower Mississippi Valley. A secondary
low-pressure system was analyzed in Tennessee with a central
pressure of 1000mb (29.53 in Hg). Current surface observations and
RADAR depicted scattered light to moderate snow on the backside of
the low, extending from the Dakotas through Minnesota and the
Upper Midwest, with a more compact area of snow located in
Wisconsin on the northern extent of the main axis of heavier
precipitation extending from the upper Midwest southward to the
Southeast. A transition zone consisting of mixed precipitation and
freezing rain was located on an axis stretching from northeastern
Michigan southeastward through the eastern two-thirds of the
state, and stretching southward through portions of the
Appalachian Mountains. In addition, moderate to heavy rainfall was
also falling along a north-south axis extending from the
Pennsylvania southward through the Ohio Valley and East Coast,
excluding higher elevations in the Appalachians.

Scattered light to moderate snow is forecast to continue across
the northern High Plains today, with an additional few inches of
snow expected as rates intensify on Friday as due to a secondary
low that forms over Great Lakes region and retrogrades westward.
Additional accumulations of 3-6 inches are expected across the
region, with locally higher amounts possible. Winter-related
impacts from this storm have and continue to spread northeastward
into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as an additional secondary low
forms across the Southeast. This low will move northeastward along
the East Coast, bringing plentiful moisture and winter impacts
where temperature profiles allow to interior portions of the
Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Additional freezing rain accretions of
0.25"+ are currently forecast along a narrow portion of Maryland
and West Virginia, with a much more broad region stretching from
near Buffalo, NY through the Appalachian Mountains of West
Virginia and northern Virginia expected to accumulate 0.1"+ inches
of ice. Further north, temperature profiles will be cold enough to
support accumulating snow across the interior Northeast and New
England, with a wide range of snowfall accumulations up to 12-24"
possible through the weekend, with the highest totals expected in
the higher elevations of upstate New York and New England. As a
result of multiple days of snow, blowing snow, and freezing rain
across a broad swath of the country, travel may become dangerous
or impossible at times, so be sure to refer to WPC or your local
NWS office to access the latest forecasts and learn about
potential impacts to your area.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
