...Moderate to heavy snow will continue over the Upper Midwest
through this evening before tapering off or switching to a wintry
mix overnight...

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for eastern South Dakota,
southern Minnesota, and north/northwestern Iowa.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of South
Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

At 900 AM CDT...A low pressure center was located over
southwestern Kansas, at approximately 38N, 99.8W, with a central
pressure of 1000mb, or 29.53 inches of mercury. An occluded front
extended to the east through Missouri into another low pressure
center. Surface observations and Doppler radar indicated that
moderate snow was falling over South Dakota and Nebraska, while
moderate and isolated heavier snow was falling over portions of
Minessota, Iowa, and Illinois. To the south, mixed precipitation
was occurring over central Illinois and Indiana, while showers and
thundestorms persisted along a frontal boundary extending from
central Illinois to Louisiana.

Over the next 24 hours the low pressure system will continue a
slow progression to the east, weakening with time. Moderate to
heavy snow is expected to continue over the Upper Midwest where
widespread accumulations of 4 to 6 inches are likely, though some
isolated areas in Minnesota and Iowa may recieve more. As warmer
air encroaches north later in the day the snow will give way to a
wintry mix over the region. Freezing rain within this wintry mix
could accumulate on roads and sidewalks, generating slippery
coniditons. Therefore, caution should be exercised if traveling
overnight.
