...WINTER STORM DEVELOPING OVER THE SOUTHWEST U.S. WILL HEAD
TOWARD THE SOUTHERN PLAINS...

WINTER STORM WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT FOR MUCH OF NEW
MEXICO...WESTERN TEXAS INCLUDING THE TEXAS PANHANDLE...AND
OKLAHOMA. HEAVY SNOW WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTHWESTERN
PORTION OF THE TEXAS PANHANDLE AS WELL AS PORTIONS OF NORTH TEXAS
AND SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO.

AN ICE STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR A SMALL PORTION OF WESTERN
TEXAS...JUST EAST OF EL PASO.

SNOW ADVISORIES ARE IN EFFECT FOR THE NORTHERN AND WESTERN EDGES
OF THE TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA PANHANDLES...AS WELL AS PORTIONS OF
SOUTHWESTERN KANSAS...AND EASTERN ARIZONA.

WINTER STORM WATCHES HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR PORTIONS OF CENTRAL
ARIZONA...NORTHERN NEW MEXICO...WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...EASTERN
OKLAHOMA...KANSAS...NEBRASKA...SOUTHWESTERN IOWA...WESTERN
MISSOURI...AND NORTHWESTERN ARKANSAS.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES ARE IN EFFECT FOR A THIN LINE EXTENDING
FROM NORTHERN TEXAS...SOUTHWESTWARD TO THE MEXICAN BORDER. 

AT 900 AM CST...A MIDDLE TO UPPER LEVEL CLOSED LOW CURRENTLY
LOCATED OVER THE NORTHERN BAJA PENINSULA OF MEXICO WAS SLOWLY
MOVING TO THE EAST...AND IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THIS MOTION OVER
THE NEXT 24 HOURS. PACIFIC MOISTURE WILL FUEL THIS EVENT. AS THE
PACIFIC MOISTURE BEING STEERED BY THE SUBTROPICAL JET ENCOUNTERS
AN ARCTIC AIRMASS...UNSETTLED WEATHER WILL ENSUE...USHERING IN THE
NEXT WINTRY MIX FOR THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES AND PLAINS STATES.

RECENT RADAR TRENDS HAVE SHOWN A SWATH OF PRECIPITATION SPANNING
ACROSS SOUTHEAST ARIZONA...SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO AND CENTRAL TEXAS.
SURFACE OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THAT MOST OF THE PRECIPITATION
REACHING THE GROUND HAS BEEN RAIN...HOWEVER...A MIXTURE OF LIGHT
SNOW...SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN EXISTS ON THE NORTHERN EDGES OF THE
PRECIPITATION WHERE TEMPERATURES ARE COLD ENOUGH TO SUPPORT FROZEN
PRECIPITATION. AT THIS TIME...THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPORTS OF SNOW
OR ICE ACCUMULATION ACROSS THE AFFECTED AREA.

SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW ARE EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT 24
HOURS...WITH 8 TO 12 INCHES OVER NEW MEXICO AND THE TEXAS
PANHANDLE. AS THIS ENERGY MOVES INTO THE PLAINS THE PRECIPITATION
WILL CROSSOVER TO FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET. UP TO A HALF INCH OF
ICE ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE SOUTHERN
PLAINS BY SUNDAY.
