A tropical wave had moved off the coast of Africa to the vicinity of Cabo Verde on August 10th. The system moved west while
developing slowly, becoming a tropical depression about 480 miles east of the Leeward Islands. Later in the morning, strengthening
had continued and the system was upgraded to Tropical Storm Grace. Continuing to move just north of west, vertical wind shear took a-
toll as the system approached southern Hispaniola, with Grace regaining tropical depression status prior to moving across the Barahona
Peninsula on the late morning of the 16th. Once clear of Haiti, Grace regained tropical storm status very early on the 17th. That
afternoon, the cyclone crossed Jamaica. Rapid intensification ensued south of the Cayman Islands, with Grace becoming a hurricane
late on the mroning of the 18th. On the morning of the 19th, Grace made landfall near Tulum, Mexico. Weakening to a tropical storm
over the Yucatan Peninsula, Grace regained hurricane intensity over the Bay of Campeche while turning more to the west on the 20th.
Intensification continued, with Grace becoming a major hurricane late that night. Very early on the 21st, Grace struck Tocolutia, Mexico
and began to weaken. By that afternoon, Grace had degenerated into a tropical disturbance across southern Mexico. Its remains moved
south of due west into the northeast Pacific, becoming a tropical cyclone once more on the 23rd west of Manzanillo with the name Marty.
