WPC's Mission and Vision

Welcome to the WPC

Located in the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, MD, the Weather Prediction Center is one of the nine National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), which is part of the National Weather Service (NWS).  The WPC exists to meet the real-time weather information needs of a growing group of users including NWS field offices, other governmental agencies, the media, the private sector, academic institutions, the international community, and the general public.  We support the NWS mission of protecting lives and property and enhancing the national economy.

Mission Statement

To synthesize the nation's daily weather story and champion the operational prediction of rain storms, winter storms, and extreme temperature events for the protection of life and property.

To be the foundation for impact-based decision support, providing meteorological expertise and service that supports critical decisions.

WPC's Strategic Plan

In 2022, WPC developed a Roadmap to adapt and thrive in an environment of rapid changes in weather, society, technology, and our workforce. It is built upon the National Weather Service and NCEP strategic plans, and provides a more granular plan specific to WPC. Importantly - the roadmap is built upon the foundation of our exceptional people, who are committed to protecting lives and livelihoods by providing the best forecasts for critical decisions.
